I would just like to point out that the blurry look of this picture, with only the sparkler in clear focus, was a very intentional choice on my part meaning to convey how in the transitory blur of daily living, it is communal participation in ritual that bind us together and gives focus to our lives. It's a very deep picture, and my artistic choices were in no way constrained by the fact that I really don't know what I'm doing with a camera.

Self Portrait, Age One
Aletheia was holding the camera and looking at the viewscreen again, when she held down the button and snapped this portrait. Aletheia, Age One, With Parents In The Corners.
We'll let this be the last picture from her first year with us. Next: the first pictures of year two.
Thoughtful
It's been a busy few days around our house. Aletheia went on another airplane trip last weekend as we traveled to the wedding of Uncle Kasey and Tia Maria. She's been a little out-of-sorts, but her molars are starting to break through, and that's no fun at all, I'm sure. Her daddy has been busy with a research project for his doctoral program, and, of course, reading the 759 page final Harry Potter book. But we'll try to be more scrupulous about updates now that we're back and settled for while.
This picture is one of the last shot from her birthday. There's nothing particularly exceptional about it, it's just a nice quiet moment before bedtime. But something about it seems really striking to me. One those pictures that I love even though I can't explain why.
In other news, Aletheia's new walking record is six steps without falling. She's on her way.

Favorite Present
Aletheia is getting a lot of mileage out of this Playskool Walk 'n Ride. She loves it. Finally, she can move away from the furniture and walk anywhere she wants to in the house. I bet it'll really help her make the transition from crawling to walking on her own.

Pointing
Just before the party started, I was entertaining Aletheia by turning the viewscreen on the camera around so she could see herself. As she was pointing at her own image, I snapped this picture.
One year old!
